Activities

The project is split up into the following activities:

Industrial research

  • > Modelling a unidirectional approach, in which the wake that enters the propeller system is not influenced by its functioning, followed by bringing together the hull system and the propeller system in a bidirectional approach.
  •
  • > Creating simulations using both structured and hybrid grids, and assessing the various pieces of OpenSource mesh software.
  •
  • > Researching, developing and implementing numerical grids and mathematical models from OpenFOAM software;
  •
  • > Designing HPSC (High Performance Scientific Computing) infrastructure.

Experimental development

  • > Assessing the total resistance during motion of the hull, and the hydrodynamic behaviour of the propeller when operating in a non-uniform wake.
  • > Developing a calculation process to predict the hydrodynamic behaviour of propellers operating in a non-uniform wake, and developing a benchmarking software platform.

The industrial research and experimental development activities are carried out by CETENA and Spring Firm in close collaboration with the Department of Mechanical and Marine Engineering at the University of Trieste, and the research group in Applied Mathematics at SISSA.

The project is managed and promoted/publicised by Friuli Innovazione, in partnership with the project leader and the other partners.
