Aims

The project has two main aims:

  • > to develop a modelling system for the propeller/hull system that considers the effects that the wake produced by the hull and the functioning of the propeller have on one another, using a mix of OpenSource and commercial computational and meshing software;
  • > to replace the commercial computational and meshing software with OpenSource alternatives, developing a set procedure to better meet the needs of the industry, and to assess the results obtained objectively.

Achieving these aims will lead to other important additional industrial benefits for the IT sector, such as:

  • > designing infrastructure models for high performance computing, optimised to meet the needs of the OpenSource software used in the project;
  • > developing advanced skills in preparing and honing IT infrastructure for use in the OpenFOAM software environment;
  • > perfecting techniques and ways of using high performance computing systems, aiming to optimise their use and performance in the OpenFOAM software environment;

> encouraging businesses and organisations in the shipbuilding and maritime sectors to be innovative in their manufacturing process using an OpenSource software platform.
